Command of God vs. Tradition of Man

On Wednesday nights at PBC, we have been going verse-by-verse through the Gospel of Mark.  When you factor in the fact that once a month we have business meeting and I am occassionally gone (ala next week when my DMin seminar meets), and various other events (ala-VBS last week), we have now been in Mark for 15 months and are beginning Chapter 7.

This has to be one of the most intriguing passages to me with specific applications in modern church life.  Nine times in 13 verses, Jesus accuses the scribes and Pharisees of placing tradition in priority over the Word of God.  In fact, he tells them in three participles (verbal adjectives) what they have done to the Scripture in promoting these traditions: 1) Neglecting; 2) Setting aside; 3) Invalidating.

My question is this: What are some clearly extra-biblical (or non-biblical) traditions that you see in religious people (primarily interested in evangelicals and Southern Baptists) today?  I will be glad to interact with any coherent, gracious, and biblical argument.

Grace and Peace,

Andrew

  1. Non bibical traditions I see that Christians take part in is Christmas ( nothing spoken by Jesus of keeping this day much less exchanging gifts with each other. We should give all year long and I am not talking about gifts.,Halloween ( although they say they are just doing something for the kids and no evil things are involved), Easter ( Easter bunnys and eggs), July 4th, Memorial day, you name it. Man has got a celebration for everything almost every month of the year. All that I find in the New Testament that Jesus said to keep is to keep the Sabbath holy. He did not say anything about keeping his birthday even. There are so many man made traditions it’s appauling to God. None of the traditions that man keep and man has made brings no honor to the Lord and then people only go to church twice a year and that’s it.

I believe that if it is not spoken by Jesus to keep, then we should not do it.

I could go on and on but I just wanted to give you my input.
    In Christ,
    Ann
